Repair & Maintenance

In November 2020, MV Hebridean Isle was at Dales Marine’s facilities in Greenock for Simplex-Turbulo company to carry out service work on the vessel’s stern tube seals. The Hebridean Isles was built by Cochranes in 1985 and has been providing sterling service for the last 36 years.

Despite her age, the seals were found to be in good condition, and all the spare parts required were available ex stock.

Scope of Work

  • Both forward and aft liners were machined and polished to remove the seal running grooves
  • The seal box and spacer plate spigot were machined by 1 mm to achieve the correct wear downs
  • The seals were reassembled with new sealing rings and bolted on with new washers
  • Checking of the alignment
  • The stern tube refilled, and the seals’ pressures were tested
  • The seal cambers were filled, and new anodes fitted

After 36 years of service, some corrosion on the aft seal housing was noted, though the housing was still good enough to reuse. The housing will be re- checked at the next docking
