Dales Apprentice Completes Explorer Belt Challenge in Bavaria
Earlier this summer, our Apprentice Engineer Joseph Milloy embarked on the Greenock Explorer Belt Challenge 2025 a true challenge of a lifetime and one of the highest awards in the Scouting movement.
The Explorer Belt is no ordinary trip. It is a unique 10-day expedition designed to test participants resilience, teamwork, and independence, while deepening their understanding of another country, its culture, and way of life. For Joseph and his team, this meant travelling across Bavaria where they faced the challenge of navigating new environments and overcoming physical and mental tests along the way.
Throughout the expedition, Joseph and his fellow explorers spent more than 50 hours travelling – whether on foot, by bike, canoe, horse, boat, or dinghy. The journey demanded careful planning, endurance, and collaboration as the team worked together to complete their route and tasks. Alongside the physical demands, they also had to immerse themselves in the local culture, interact with the communities they visited, and truly experience life in Bavaria.
Reflecting on his experience, Joseph shared:
“This trip was an adventure and experience of a lifetime and has helped me achieve one of the top awards within the scouting movement. The skills I developed leadership, determination, and resilience are ones I’ll take forward into my engineering apprenticeship at Dales, and into life.”
Dales is proud to have supported Joseph on this journey by providing branded T-shirts, water bottles, a custom flag, and a contribution towards travel costs. Our commitment to backing opportunities like this reflects our belief in encouraging young people to challenge themselves, build transferable skills, and grow as individuals both inside and outside of the workplace.

Completing the Explorer Belt is an incredible milestone, and Joseph’s success highlights the values that sit at the heart of both Scouting and engineering problem-solving, determination, teamwork, and leadership.
We are delighted to celebrate Joseph’s achievement and look forward to supporting his continued journey at Dales as he applies these lessons and experiences to his career in engineering. His story is a great reminder that with hard work, dedication, and the right support, people can achieve remarkable things.
